BASE MARKS:
M77 = Model number, x = Opaque white glaze, Ashtead Potters mark = 1923/1924
The M77 Polar Bear is quite a small piece standing approximately 3 inches (7.6cm) tall. The artist is unknown but the work is often compared to that of John Skeaping for Wedgwood.
There is a sticker on the base of this example which may be that of an original outlet of Ashtead Potters pottery. The design and fonts used on the sticker certainly indicate it could period from the be 1920s or 1930s. The text is unclear but a number of words can be made out: J. W. Reid (may be T. W. Reid), 27 (may be 29) WELLINGTON PLACE, BELFAST. The words 'FINE ART' can also be seen. Of course this may be a later reseller, antique shop or gallery but if anyone knows anything about this company then please supply information.
